will be harvesting energy off the Isle of Wight

Just south of the Isle of Wight tidal currents are perfect for harvesting energy. And Dutch tidal energy pioneer Tocardo has been selected to reap the harvest. Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre (PTEC) has signed partnerships with Tocardo as well as Schottel Hydro GmbH.

Permission and grid connection

PTEC selected Tocardo as one of its turbine maufacturers for an ambitious 30MW tidal energy project. Earlier this year the organisation took all the necessary steps to obtain permission to start the project. PTEC also has a solid offer to connect the new maritime power plant to a grid in order to distribute the electricity to homes, factories and streetlights. The maritime energy project is more than likely to create hundreds of jobs and boost the local economy, like many sustainable offshore energy initiatives have done before PTEC.

Milestone

The PTEC management considers the signing of Tocardo an important milestone for the project. The recent acceleration of tidaI energy in the United Kingdom is another proof of the outstanding possibilities the industry has to offer. The current growth will inevitably lead to significant cost reduction.

Tocardo is working together with Schottel Hydro and PTEC to determine the optimal site layout. Onshore construction of the tidal energy installations is scheduled to start in 2017.

Energy farm

Hans van Breugel, CEO of Tocardo, said: “Engaging with PTEC is a significant step in the commercialisation process of Tocardo’s standard offshore tidal solution, the Universal Foundation Platform Structure. Having deployed our turbines at various sites in the Netherlands and operating these projects successfully, we feel confident to jointly realise this world leading multi-MW tidal energy farm at the Isle of Wight. PTEC follow a thorough step-by-step process towards successful project deployment, just like Tocardo does in product development, and we are proud to have been selected.”
