steps into the 80+foot sailing yacht sector
In 2016 Contest Yachts of Holland launched the 19-meter sailing yacht Contest 67CS. At the Cannes Yachting Festival, the company announced the construction of a 26-meter flagship: the new Contest 85CS. Set to launch in 2018, this is the Dutch blue water specialist’s first step into the 80+foot yacht sector. The Contest 85CS is made in design partnership with the German naval architects judel/vrolijk & co.
The Contest 85CS extends the potential for performance cruising of both new and upsizing owners. Managing director Arjen Conijn: “The Contest 85CS will provide for both long-distance cruising and regatta participation as well as social sailing for up to 10 guests in a customizable accommodation plan. The yacht is supported by a crew of up to four.”
Semi-customization of the interior
This step into the 80+ foot sector brings the advantage of enhanced privacy for guests, created by a fully enclosable galley and crew quarters. Unusual for this size, and reflecting Contest Yachts individual semi-customization, is that the owner can specify either an aft or a forward master suite, with service quarters also changing ends. The interior design is modern-classic by Wetzels Brown Partners of Amsterdam, who’ve been on board with Contest Yachts since the press-acclaimed launch of the Contest 72CS in 2012.
Fast and stable cruising
The hull form of the Contest 85CS follows the judel/vrolijk designed Contest 67CS. With a moderate-shallow underbody running back from a lightly raked bow with integral bowsprit and optional furler for asymmetrics, to a broad stern with twin rudders for precise control at the twin helm stations. Conijn: “This approach allows both for fast, stable cruising and performance circumnavigations. The composite construction is according to Contests’ infusing techniques which have been practiced for more than 20 years, and under Lloyds’ since day one. This includes a sandwich laminate throughout, from sheer line to keel stub, with a single shot infusion for each of hull, grid and then deck.”
In designing the new flagship, great attention has been paid to noise and vibration reduction, including the latest technology sound insulation for the engine room. The 85CS features great service access to all systems and equipment and a dedicated technical room. A large lazarette will house a compressor and toys, while a sizeable RIB can be stowed kept low in the foredeck tender well. As the new flagship, the Contest 85CS sits at the head of a range of eight yachts from 26m/85ft to 13m/42ft 42ft, including the 16m Contest 52MC motor cruiser.
