Lightweight Containers

Since 2015, Lightweight Containers has been developing innovative recycling technologies for KeyKegs along with technology institutes and partners in the recycling industry. The family-owned company, market leader in high-quality one-way kegs, develops, produces and sells the KeyKeg®. At Drinktec in Germany, Lightweight Containers presented the first KeyKegs made from 10% used KeyKegs and a total of 40% recycled materials. This percentage will rise rapidly as the collection of used KeyKegs expands.

Circular design

The plastic recycling industry is a relatively new one and is rapidly developing. Plastic products with a more complex composition are not yet being recycled on a large scale. That’s why Lightweight Containers decided to develop new recycling methods itself. After two and a half years of research, the company now can process used KeyKegs on a recycling line. It has helped development enormously that the KeyKeg has a circular design and already mostly consists of mono materials. Lightweight Containers can already reuse 81% of a KeyKeg.

Pilot projects

Lightweight Containers has started two pilot projects for collecting used kegs. The team has worked out several models and are testing them now in Amsterdam; one through beverage distributors who collect the empty kegs during their rounds, and the other, once they have been separated out of the garbage after collection by the city. The KeyKegs are then compressed and brought to our recycling sites, thousands at a time. Lightweight Containers expect to start a similar pilot in the United Kingdom.
